3 Questions for Lucas Wiens, Software Developer at FASTEC

In our series “3 Questions for…” we regularly feature interviews with FASTEC employees, where they answer both professional and personal questions. This time, we spoke with Lucas Wiens, Software Developer. He has been part of FASTEC since 2018.

Please introduce yourself briefly and describe what exactly you do at FASTEC.

Lucas Wiens: “My name is Lucas, I’m 29 years old and have been working at FASTEC for seven years. After completing my degree in mathematics, I was looking for a way to start my professional career and found a great opportunity at FASTEC.

After just a few weeks, I started working as a software developer. Following several years in standard development in the area of production planning, I moved to the department for custom development.

There, I implement individual customer requirements and create tangible added value. This also includes occasionally participating in workshops with customers to discuss and clarify technical aspects. In doing so, you get to know the production environments and working methods of customers from a wide range of industries.

What I particularly enjoy is the variety of tasks and the close collaboration with customers in programming projects, because it gives me a lot of freedom and the opportunity to actively contribute my ideas.”

Have you recently experienced a moment when you were particularly proud to be part of our company? If so, what happened?

Lucas Wiens: “I recently took part in a workshop related to the introduction of SAP at a long-standing customer in the pharmaceutical industry. The focus was on adapting the interface and adjusting the customer’s workflows in the areas of machine and production data acquisition (MDA/PDA) as well as production planning.

During the workshop, it became clear time and again that FASTEC is able to make many things possible and works with customers in a highly solution-oriented way. We were able to identify a number of smaller challenges that could potentially arise during the process changes.

At the same time, we had already prepared suitable solution approaches to help the customer address and resolve these issues at an early stage. In this way, our initiative created significant added value already during the implementation phase—before the customer even began to benefit from our software.”

Which developments or opportunities at FASTEC inspire you to continue developing your own skills?

Lucas Wiens: “At FASTEC, there is a strong focus on identifying which role suits each person best while also contributing to the company’s success. Even within custom development, there are different areas of specialization. Tasks are intentionally distributed so that everyone can contribute their strengths and continue developing them.

In addition, I see the current developments at FASTEC very positively, as new technologies are continuously being introduced. Most recently, we were offered training on new technologies that are intended to make our software more modern and more capable.

I really welcome this, because as a software developer it is important to keep learning and developing your skills.”
